A learning institution providing the course. This may be be a College of FE, an adult learning provider, an independent training provider, or a charity, etc.

The task set to enable learners to show what they have learnt, and assessed against particular assessment criteria. Often abbreviated to ‘AT1’, or ‘AT2’ etc. for example, on the tab for that AT.

A piece of work submitted by the learner in relation to an Assessment Task

Internally assessed courses

Courses where the centre carries out the assessment, and internal moderation, prior to external moderation.

Externally assessed courses

Courses where external Awarding Body carries out the assessment, or the OPAL system itself carries out the assessment, for example, through multiple choice formal assessments in an e-Learning course.

Internal moderation (IM)

The process of moderation carried out by a centre for all ‘internally assessed’ courses.

External moderation (EM)

The process of moderation carried out by ana Awarding Body to check that accreditation claims made by centres for their learners, are reliable, genuine and justified. This usually involves checking assessments of a sample of learners and that Internal moderation was carried out effectively by the centre to ensure this.

Informal assessment

Informal assessments are sometimes used as formative or diagnostic tests designed to help learning, or to check learners are ready for a particular level, but which are NOT counted towards the achievement of an achievement certificate. The term is often used to distinguish the assessment from the alternative ‘formal assessment’.

Formal assessment

Formal assessments are assessments which are used to check that learners can meet the required assessment criteria set to mark the actual achievement of an accredited award, such as a qualification so  DO count towards the achievement of an achievement certificate. The term is often used to distinguish the assessments from ‘informal assessments’.

Run ID

A cohort or group of learners or ‘course run’. Each Run id is given a unique seven number code when registered. Typically a Run id will be a single class of learners, but the centres may decide they wish to group learners differently into larger or small Run id’s for their own admin purposed.

ComponentA component is a unit of work that can 1 or several tabs.  A component is submitted as one item to be marked.  It will usually have a common theme or be related to a classroom session.  When designing a course remember that you cannot submit parts of a component so think about this when designing your course.  For example if you have 1 component with 10 tasks then all 10 tasks have to be submitted for marking in one go.  You could have 10 components with 1 task each, then each item can be submitted for marking individually.  The component name appears on the menu screen.
