Externally Assessed Courses

- The learner is enrolled in the usual way
- The identified tutor/assessor and centre admin contacts are sent login credentials for the learners registered on the Run ID/ cohort. Whenever they deem it appropriate, they forward the appropriate login to each learner.
- The learner logs into the system.
- The centre admin must decide - in liaison with the tutor - when the ‘Formal Assessment’ should be made available to learners in that Run ID/cohort. This is to enable the centre to manage ‘controlled assessment environments’. This allows the centre admin to ‘open’ the Formal Assessment at an appropriate time e.g. when a room is booked and learners can be invigilated. The centre may want to have different Run IDs/cohorts of learners to take the test at different times and at different places. This feature allows RUN IDs/cohorts to be managed independently of each other in this way. To make the formal assessment so available, the admin contact for the Run ID needs to be logged in to OPAL, and then...
- enter ‘RUN IDs’ > ‘Edit’ and in the ‘Formal Assessment’ area, click the ‘UPDATE STATUS’ button so that the Formal Assessment label states ’OPEN’. The Formal Assessment is then immediately available to learners in that RUN ID/cohort.
- Toggle this same button to reverse the Formal Assessment availability. When the label states ‘CLOSED’ the Formal Assessment is not available to the learners for that RUN ID/cohort. (NB When ‘CLOSED’, learners are still able to access their OPAL learning area and also the ‘Practice Test’, but not the ‘Formal; Assessment’.)
- When allowed access, the Learner can complete the Formal Assessment with one of two outcomes:
- The learner does not pass the formal assessment
- In this case, the learner will see a message stating... “Sorry you did not pass. Unfortunately, you have no more attempts left to take this test online. Please contact your tutor to discuss whether your learning centre offers other options”
- The learner passed
- In which case they get a message stating that they passed the test.
